Position Summary:

As a Wind and Site Engineer, you will support the North American sales team by suggesting appropriate turbine models, evaluating the turbine suitability, determining annual energy production and preparing site assessment reports at prospective wind farms being bid. Increase bid competitiveness by optimizing project layouts and mitigating turbine curtailment, thus reducing cost of energy at certain projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a meteorological expert to various internal departments by providing guidance on turbine model selection at prospective projects and site specific meteorological conditions to be used for internal analyses.

  • Build wind modeling at prospective projects, with appropriate software (WAsP, WindPRO, etc), by batching and cleaning raw data from meteorological towers, sodars and lidars, creating elevation contour and roughness maps, performing long-term MCP analysis of short-term time series data, and analyzing ambient turbulence at varying hub heights.

  • Uses customer-provided wind farm layouts, run WAsP, WindPRO and internal models to determine annual energy production (including losses and uncertainties), assess extreme winds and flow angles, calculate ambient, wake and total effective turbulence, analyze long-term climatic conditions (such as temperature and air density), and determine fatigue loads at each turbine location for prospective projects being bid by the sales team. In cases of excessive turbulence and/or excessive fatigue loads, determine appropriate curtailment strategies such as wind sector management and wind velocity management.

  • Prepares internal and public Site Assessment Reports for the sales and service sales teams. The public SARs (to be released to customers) contain the wind analysis and mechanical loads results. The internal SARs also contain annual energy production (including losses and uncertainties) and project risk and potential risk mitigation/project optimization suggestions.

  • Works with Sales managers to ensure all needs of potential customers are met. Typically, this entails analyses to increase competitiveness and optimize annual energy production of prospective projects.  This can include but isn’t limited to: site visits, customer meetings, layout optimization, shadow flicker analysis, sound analysis, GIS analysis, meteorological campaign design, custom reporting, and basic BOP design.

  • At least 3 years in Wind Energy (preferably wind and energy resource assessment)

  • Boundary layer meteorology knowledge, wind turbine mechanical loads knowledge, meteorological instrumentation knowledge, statistical uncertainty analysis knowledge

  • WindPRO skills, WAsP skills, Open Wind skills, QGIS skills, Microsoft Office skills, wind turbine array optimization skills, wind and meteorological data analysis and quality control skills

  • Ability to work with strict deadlines, ability to work concurrently with many projects, ability to work closely with people specializing in different disciplines across many departments, ability to work with potential customers

  • IEC61400 knowledge, CFD wind modeling skills, MATLAB, Visual Basic programming, SQL and/or Access database development experience a plus, working knowledge of one or more GIS software tools (such as ArcGIS, Global Mapper or QGIS)
