Position Summary:
As a Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for reviewing, evaluating, and understand State and Federal regulations, assess, and communicate the implications of those regulations to Operations, and works with Operations to develop and implement cost-effective compliance solutions. Works with Regional HSE Officers and Engineers to develop and implement Best Practices solutions to common safety regulations and issues. Support includes the design, development and implementation of safety and risk control programs. Functions as a subject matter expert and consultant to help internal clients build sustainable loss improvement process within their operations.
Responsibilities:
- Develops and maintains expert knowledge of the regulations and requirements applicable to the site.
- Acts as site expert for specific regulations in their assigned field. Maintains awareness of all new and changing federal and state regulations and is informed of their timing and potential impact.
- Provide HSE legal and other requirements support to the new developed technology to be working in North America.
- Develops and maintains a good understanding of the units and processes to which the regulations and requirements must be applied.
- Provides technical support to the Emergency Response (ER) functions.
- Supports Regional Officers when investigating root causes of incidents and accidents.
- Works with Engineering and other support functions to create effective corrective and improvement actions for identified risks.
- Facilitates the writing or writes site safety procedures and helps functional groups implement those procedures.
- Reduces safety costs through the implementation of best practices at the site.
- Develops and implements cost-effective compliance solutions
- Demonstrates an untiring effort to find new and better ways to comply with new and existing regulations and requirements that reduce the burden on Operations and other functional groups.
- Works with the region and other site safety organizations on consolidated contracts which add value to the organization.
- Work with general and subcontractor safety professionals to develop site improvement.
- Effectively communicate changes and/or updates to Contractor Safety program.
- Evaluation of regulatory compliance associated with contractor safety programs/policies.
- Provide support for various EHS database and information systems (e.g., Contractor Mgmt Software, SSRT Scorecards, Incident Tracking, contractor/vendor safety metrics, contractor auditing).
- Develops, implement, and maintain core Industrial Safety and Hygiene policies, procedures, and systems based on ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System to simplify and streamline the Nordex USA, Inc. environmental program requirements.
- Represents Nordex USA when dealing with external organizations and regulatory bodies.
- Assesses reports and data compiled by contractors, consultants, government agencies, and others to determine environmental impact and ensure compliance with technical specifications or regulatory and/or permit requirements.
- Provides support for preparing regulatory reports, or other compliance submittals.
- Assists with managing (including the screening and selection) contractors assigned to supporting various projects. As part of risk management responsibilities, review the work product of contractors, and identify needs to meet project expectations.
- Participates in professional, industry, and/or regulatory organizations and associations, as required, to help achieve Nordex’s strategic goals in shaping legislation, state and federal agency policies/guidance, etc.

Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree with an advanced degree preferred, or equivalent work experience.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or an equivalent professional designation desirable
- Experience with programmatic (Compliance and Performance) audits/inspections including record keeping, and action-item resolution
- 5 - 9 years of progressively responsible experience in a Corporate Safety Department and wind farm experience desirable.
- Advanced technical knowledge of Industrial Safety disciplines (General Industry, Construction, Behavior-Based Safety, etc.) related to construction and operation of power generation projects, and related U.S. and Canadian federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Able to complete OSHA 500 or 501 trainer – Preferred already authorized.
- Proven Industrial Safety leadership skills, and an ability to coach and lead environmental efforts.
- Ability to positively represent the Safety process to internal and external stakeholders.
- Must possess the ability to think and analyze situations in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to be innovative, initiate and manage change, and deliver results.
- Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills are essential, most importantly strong team-building skills within a rapidly growing environment.
- Must be capable of positively influencing the management team when necessary.
- Independent, detail-oriented, creative, tenacious, and flexible are essential characteristics.
- Proficient in the following application programs: Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Explorer, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat Standard, Photo Editors, and Blackberry applications.
- Ability to meet specific weight limits of 265 lbs. max.
- Ability to climb wind turbines up to 100M.
