Gearbox Repair Technician (m/f/d)

The Gearbox Repair Technician is a West Branch, IA based role within the Services Resources department that performs a variety of site activities including, but not limited to, inspections, retrofits, large component repairs.



  • Gearbox repairs, including but not limited to, full component replacements, bearing replacements, HSS/IMS repairs, full teardown and rebuilds
    • Demonstrated and proven experience surrounding gearbox repairs
      •  Primary focus on the Moventas 2900 gearboxes
  • Diagnose, analyze and resolve issues surrounding the drivetrain
  • Borescope inspections and reporting
  • Work with Resource management to improve processes surrounding the drivetrain
  • Utilize specialized tooling and equipment to perform activities
    • SKF Mounting/Dismounting high pressure tooling
    • Low speed shrink disc tooling
    • Load rigging
    • Torque and tension equipment
  • Work directly with Engineering to develop repair procedures
  • Complete work for customers at out of warranty projects or with other OEM Gearboxes
  • Identify potential hazards and communicates to management
  • Follow defined instructions and schedules, executing plans as directed and performs according to instruction from Resource management
  • Establish and maintain proper business relationships with customers, subcontractors and peers, as well as perform necessary administrative duties accurately
  • Utilize appropriate safety gear, protective equipment, and control or dissipation of energy sources to ensure work is performed in safe manner
  • Properly maintain tools and equipment used to perform repair activities
  • Other responsibilities as assigned



  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • A 2-year degree in wind turbine technology or similar field strongly preferred
  • 2-5 years of field service experience preferred with operations and maintenances, troubleshooting, inspections, large component exchanges and repairs of wind turbines
  • Demonstrated use and understanding of power tools
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally for extended periods of times and also requires working overtime, including flexible and variable work schedule as needed to meet business needs 
  • Able to work independently and on a team in a fast paced setting
  • Ability to be certified and work with both medium and high voltage equipment
  • Maintain required training certifications such as rigger/signal person certification and crane calling certification
  • Ability to read, interpret and understand drawings, schematics, instructions and schedules  
  • Basic computer skills, familiarity with internet based programs, MS office, and ability to generate data and reports using a computer
  • Must possess a full valid U.S. driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Passport
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized for employment in the United States and will not require employer sponsored work authorization now or in the future for employment in the United States
  • Ability to meet specific OSHA and ANSI weight limits of 260 lbs. max.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical administered by a medical examiner to ensure ability to safely perform job functions and meet the physical demands of the position


This position requires fieldwork and is in a wind farm environment, primarily during normal business hours.  However, the site operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which will include changes of shift, overtime, and includes exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust and humidity, and work in confined spaces. Ability to climb turbine towers daily (up to 100meters) as required. Participate in an on-call schedule as necessary.  Willing to work overtime, holidays, weekends, and on short notice during planned/unplanned/emergency site outages. 

Work may involve lifting of materials up to 70 pounds. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but is not limited to: eye safety glasses; hearing protectors; steel-toe boots; and hardhats. Loose fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted.
